Getting the best from a wardrobe

What size should you go for?

If you’re getting a new wardrobe, the first thing you may want to consider is what size you want. It’s good to think about how much you need to store and to measure the space where you’re going to put your wardrobe.

Organizing inside – folding

A wardrobe is a big box – and how it’s organized inside is what helps you easily access your things. Shelves are great for things that you can fold up and stack – like chunkier sweaters. A drawer can be a perfect, easy access home for your T-shirts – just fold them and put them upright so you can see them all at a glance. Clothes boxes inside a drawer mean you can keep things like socks or belts together so you can find them super fast.

Organizing inside – hanging

Hanging things like shirts, dresses and jackets means fewer wrinkles and gives you a good overview so you can see what you have and get some outfit inspiration. You can arrange your clothes by type, keeping like items such as jackets and coats together. Or by color, which makes things look calmer – especially helpful if you have an open wardrobe.

See you all next year

Boxes in your wardrobe are great for keeping seasonal clothes out of your way until you need them again. They are resistant to dust and some even have ventilation nets to let air circulate to keep your things fresh.

There’s more space on top

You can turn the top of your wardrobe into organized storage with some boxes. Go for ones that blend in with your wardrobe if you want to keep things looking calm.

Putting your clothes in the spotlight

Lighting inside of or on top of your wardrobe can help you get a better overview of your clothes and find things quicker. Lights on top can also give you a nice, soft background light when they reflect off the closed doors. Plus, if you and your partner get up at different times, the early riser can find their clothes just using these lights, while the other sleeps blissfully on.

Mirrors that give you more

A large mirror is really a dressing area essential. Many IKEA wardrobes come with mirror doors, but if you're looking for an alternative, you can use a full-length mirror to mount on your wall. Or why not go for a standing mirror? You can hang tomorrow’s outfit up tonight and sleep a bit longer in the morning or freshen up worn-once clothes by airing them.
