Cute, with a PLASTIC shade design flawCharlene S.I bought 2. The grandkids loved them (ages 4 & 6) but immediately started spinning themselves and friends around in it - certainly not what I intended and I fear they'll break them soon. Disappointed with red "pad" on bottom. It's not actually a pad, but hard plastic. For comfort, my daughter will put a chair pad inside. The awning or shade is a BIG miss. It's unbreathable plastic, which I didn't realize until assembling it. Although a child can't seal themselves completely inside - I checked, and it doesn't lock down tight although the 4 y/o was trying her best to close the gap and seal herself in - I consider the plastic covering to be a huge design flaw. A breathable fabric shade would be much safer.4
Big hit!LauraThe child I bought this for LOVES it. I also have two bought five years ago (blue and orange) for my school library. They’ve held up very well to daily use and are always the seating of choice for kids.5
Cute concept but dangerousHeatherBase is not weighed enough. My 5yo was swiveling in the chair and it flipped over and smacked him in the mouth and he broke his front tooth.1
Great chair fit the kidsLoriPerfect hideaway for the kids to read or watch tv on their own5

Comfort/CushionFrank N.One thing is missing on this product is the cushion, there's no sitting/inside cushion on this for the kids to be comfortable while sitting on it.3
Buy This!!jayshannon23I was a bit unsure about buying this but i'm glad I did. It looks super cute in my daughters room and she has a blast in it. The bottom is a bit heavy but boy does this sucker spin. This is a kids chair btw5
Kids love itAMR1985My 5 and 8 year olds love this chair!5
Very fun chairrprentWe have two of these chairs in our waiting room. Very fun. The only problem is the site fabric becomes dirty quickly and we can not wash the hand stains out of it. Wishing IKEA would make a colored fabric replacement.4
Excellent sensory and discovery chair!emistephThis was a Christmas gift for my 3-year-old great niece, and I can honestly say that I doubt I will ever be able to find a gift she loves more than this chair. IT SPINS! The construction and the design are fabulous. Within minutes she raved over loving this amazing egg!5
Colleenx3My son loves it. He hides in it4
Great chairhm123Overall great chair. Needs a pillow though to be comfortable. Also, it started making noises when swiveling after one day of use.4
Lovely & Robust chairJ KunappeI found this only one left in my local IKEA. My kids ( 6 & 8 year) loved it so much. When they closed the lid, they could enjoy a totally isolated room by themselves. Unique IKEA PS series item! We do love it.5
Great idea for privacyKPSZEI bought this swivel chair for my 9 year old who likes to read in privacy but does not like to be alone. This chair allows her to sit in the living room with family yet has personal space to read! Excellent Idea!5
Kids Love the ChairFlipuszVery nice - purchased 2 of them - Pretty sturdy; a little challenging to put together if not handy --5
Unique gift for a grand daughter!Cinders FinI got this for my grand daughter along with some books. I thought it would be a nice hangout place for her to enjoy some quiet time. Easy for me to put together by myself.5
Ok can use some improvementsnalexp76I am a little on the fence with this chair. My son loved it in IKEA and took interest a couple of times at home. I believe the reason he lost interest is due to comfort. The seat is plastic and not the most comfortable. What this chair urgently needs is a cushioned insert to entice children to use it. I intent it for his reading chair. Even with the little round pillow I purchased it isn't the most comfortable.3
Cutest thing ever!BeeboopThis is great for the little ones to have a little privacy or alone time without being too far away from others! The swivel is an added bonus! Great feature. The outer shell is easily washed, and the shade is removable, so can probably be hand washed. Haven’t tried that yet. This chair is appropriate for ages 3-5. Maybe even longer! Love this chair.5

Our take on polyester

Polyester is a durable, wrinkle-resistant and easy-care material that is ideal for many home furnishing products like rugs, pillows, quilts and cushions. The downside to virgin polyester is that it is made from oil, coal or natural gas. This means that when we use virgin polyester, we are exhausting the planet’s natural resources. Our response to this, is to replace all virgin polyester with recycled in our products. In 2020, we achieved the milestone of replacing 79% of the virgin polyester used in IKEA textile products and will accelerate the transformation towards the aim of only using recycled polyester throughout the product range where polyester is used.

Since 2003, children throughout the world have spun, hidden and created their own cozy space in LÖMSK swivel armchair. Child psychologist Barbie Clarke, who has researched children and their development, has seen it act like a magnet to children. "Children love things that change into something else. It stimulates the imagination and gives a feeling of having magical powers. And spinning in the armchair is not just a fun game, it also contributes to important physical development,” explains Barbie. “When children climb, hang upside down, run, balance and spin, their sensory systems develop ─ particularly their balance.”

An armchair for more imagination and play

Today, Designer Monika Mulder has four children of her own. "In our home, it has been used as a toy stove, so that sometimes when the room is to be quickly cleaned, everything from the floor is hidden under the pulled down hood. Later in the evening, LÖMSK often looks like a glowing ball when one of the children sits inside it with a tablet." For Monika, the fact that LÖMSK is used in unexpected ways is positive. "In a pretend world, children can comfortably prepare for adult life ─ with nothing predetermined. It’s the imagination of children that decides what LÖMSK should be.”

Only recycled or renewable plastics

Plastic is most commonly derived from oil and gas, which are non-renewable fossil sources. These sources do not renew themselves and will eventually be depleted. Our ambition is that by 2030, all plastic used in our products will be based on renewable or recycled materials. Renewable plastic is made from materials such as vegetable oil, corn, wheat grain and sugar cane. Recycled plastic allows us to give a second life to non-biodegradable products such as PET bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill. Using recyclable sources also lessens our dependency on oil as a raw material. Currently more than 40% of our plastic products are based on recycled and renewable materials and our aim is to reach 100%. As we add products made from recycled and renewable materials to our offer, we hope to inspire other companies to do the same.

Phasing out single-use plastics

Single-use plastic items pollute ecosystems if not disposed of responsibly. As part of our commitment to people and the planet, all single-use plastic products from the global home furnishing range were phased out in 2020. This includes items such as plates, cups, and plastic straws offered in our restaurants, bistros, and cafes. These were replaced by disposables made from 100% renewable sources.

PET and PP our most commonly used plastics

Polythylene terephthalate (PET) and Polypropylene (PP) are durable, hygienic and shatter-resistant plastics. They absorb very little water and have good chemical resistance. Both PET and PP can be reused and recycled, which reduces waste and gives the product several lives through use and reuse. PET is the most recycled plastic in the world and can be used for many different purposes such as plastic bottles and containers for packaging food and beverages as well as for personal care products, pharmaceuticals and many other consumer products. At IKEA we mainly use recycled PET in boxes, filling material for textiles and kitchen front foil. PET is approved by health-agencies as safe to use for food and beverage. IKEA uses recycled PET that is post-consumer based, which means it is based on collected and sorted PET bottles.

Clean and safe

IKEA takes product safety very seriously and all products are tested and comply with the strictest possible laws and safety standards on all IKEA markets. Customers should always feel confident that products bought at IKEA are safe and healthy to use. IKEA wants to minimize or totally refrain from the use of chemicals and substances that can be harmful to people and the environment.

Together, we can do more

Our journey towards only using recycled or renewable plastic will take some time and require new ways of doing things, but we are determined to take responsibility and find new solutions. We want to give our customers the possibility to choose products made from more sustainable materials that can be recycled again one day. Together, we can make a big difference!

Virgin vs recycled polyester

Originally, all polyester was made from oil-based raw materials which are not renewable but we are switching to only using recycled polyester. The good thing is that polyester can be recycled over and over, without negatively affecting the quality of our products. When we make products from recycled polyester, we give a second life to material that is not biodegradable and reduce the amount that may otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean. Instead, PET and other sources of polyester are used to make textiles, storage boxes, kitchen fronts and even lamps. Recycled polyester is just as good as virgin polyester in terms of looks, quality and function, and produces about 50% less in CO2 emissions. And the material is just as clean and safe in every way.

Some challenges with recycled polyester

Recycled polyester makes us less dependent on oil. The amount we convert, is equal to the amount of virgin fossil fuel we eliminate from our polyester raw material (this excludes potential dyeing and other post recycled polyester production treatments). With some exceptions, the challenge is not the conversion of polyester into recycled itself, but to make it available to everyone by keeping it affordable. Buying low environmental impact products often comes with a higher price tag. We want to change that by working to make recycled polyester products more affordable and accessible to the many people.

Only recycled polyester

IKEA is committed to end the dependency on virgin fossil materials and only use renewable or recycled materials by 2030. We are accelerating this movement for polyester in our range and aim to replace all virgin polyester in our textile products with recycled. In 2020, IKEA replaced 79% of the virgin polyester used in IKEA textile products with recycled polyester. In volume, this means we converted 130,000 metric tonnes of recycled polyester, and saved 200,000 tonnes of virign polyester. We haven’t reached our 100% goal yet, but we have come far and overcome many obstacles on the way. These volumes make us a leader in converting to recycled polyester and we hope that our decisions can inspire and motivate whole industries to change.

Responsible sourcing

At IKEA, we demand that all recycled polyester used in IKEA products shall come from recyclers that are compliant with the Global Recycled Standard and traceability is secured to the IKEA product through requirements toward the IKEA Suppliers. By only using recycled polyester that meets the Global Recycled Standards we manage to secure social, environmental and chemical practices at the recycler’s production. We believe that the GRS standard is the best standard on the market today. We work with our partners and textile organisations such as Textile Exchange to further improve standards on recycled materials, including traceability of material beyond the recycling units.

Material

What is polyester?

Polyester is a durable, quick-drying and insulating material that is optimal to use for textiles and as filling in pillows, quilts and furniture. The material is made from crude oil – a limited resource. Since IKEA doesn’t want to contribute to more virgin oil being used, we are now gradually switching to recycled and traceable polyester from sources like PET bottles. What’s nice is that polyester can be recycled over and over, without changing or losing its great qualities.
