RustyMadeleine D.I purchased this hoping to upgrade to a higher quality colander. I hand washed it before first use and let it dry overnight. The next day I used it to strain pasta and noticed orange rust seeping from under the steel rim onto the white enamel as well as from the nails.
This means the rust was already visible when I bought it and I just didn't notice, or there was rust already present but not visible, and the heat from the pasta steam brought it out somehow.1
