Phenom. Buy em. Period.DeannaAn icon. A classic. Yes, the black brown is more expensive but…it’s solid wood vs particle board (white). And, if you CAN swing it? You can beat up the black browns, scratch and gouge them while moving (I even had movers destroy mine to full collapse no thanks to a UHaul Pod - only to still be able to repair them) and you can fill in any marks with a black sharpie and could never tell. The black brown color lasts forever. Make a hole in the wrong place nailing the back on? Again…sharpie. Lol seriously , these cabinets are my staple as a space planner. You will use every inch of space you have to maximize your rooms with these, particularly the 31” wide vs the narrow Billys and especially if you are storing fabric bolts (remove from bolts and store the fabric folded 3 side by side on each shelf), use glass shelves to get even more inches, and get doors to hide your mess and upgrade your look. Sockerbit bins fit perfect on these and also use every inch. Buy height extensions now or later and maximize the vertical space. The key point of these shelves is their depth at less than 11” and all shelves adjust except the middle, so you can truly make it so that there is no wasted space on the shelf for whatever you are storing. If you buy doors, morliden is the cheapest option with the tallest doors. Then if you need extra shelves, you can buy non matching white as they are cheaper and you won’t see them behind your doors, these are things I’ve done over a decade with mine. The corner units are great…but it’s really just the shelf with the v bracket to install them proper. These are classics and no other brand matches the quality and the footprint. Install is easy as pie. Buy extra. They sell out often. IKEA : KEEP MORE IN STOCK, ALLOW MORE FOR DELIVERY. I AM DISABLED , I CANNOT DRIVE, DELIVERY IS THE ONLY OPTION FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME.5
Purchased another years ago HUGE price increaseHThe one I purchased years ago seems to be more sturdy than the one I just purchased. The hardware of installing the shelves changed too. I think knowing what I know now, I would probably opt for purchasing a better made bookshelf out of actual wood. For the cost of this one you could walk into an antique store and get a better made one for less.3

Nice appearanceBRUCEI like the finished appearance of the bookcases with glass doors and they look nice. Some of the construction methods I question such as how the shelves are held up by the inverted cleats and holes in the shelves at the very end, not all shelves sit completely flat. The cams that are used are plastic and brittle so they are very easy to over tighten and snap without a lot of pressure. Since they are not very deep you will want to anchor them to the wall as they are wobbly on our hardwood floors. We bought a total of 5 Billy bookcases and all are like this. I know my floor is not perfectly level so this is advice for most people where the houses have settled over the years and do not have perfectly level floors. They also scuff very easily.3

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill waste – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a valuable resource instead of being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look. The day your sofa or bed needs replacing, the material in the particleboard can be recycled into something entirely new.

Designer thoughts

"It was 40 years ago I got the assignment to design a simple, functional and smart storage solution for books. I couldn't have imagined then that BILLY bookcase would wind up in so many homes across the whole world. I remember being especially pleased with the adjustable shelves and the depth of the bookcase - perfect for books. We were also able to transport it in a flat pack - an idea I was actually first to develop. The bookcase is still one of my favorites and I hope it continues to be around for many more years."
